Extra Scene

Recently I have had some construction done to my garage and around the backyard, with the construction it has left a large amount of rubble and because of this we all thought “why waste an opportunity?” as the rubble increased the audience perception of what has happened. Large quantities of the world or at least an area have been decimated with the meteor hit.

With this in mind we started coming up with ideas of what should be included with the rubble, we at first thought to use it as a simple cutaway but we came to the conclusion that considering everything is shot indoors that having a random outside shot would pull away from the narrative.  From there we came up with the idea that possibly Tom and Luke may be there or crossing over it but there wasn’t enough damage done for these two to do much.

We eventually came up with the idea with someone else completely absent from the narrative passing this area, a guy in a hazmat suit. And whilst crossing over picks up something symbolic to innocence being destroyed such as a teddy bear.

The next day we arranged to purchase everything we required, such as outfit and gasmask, luckily one of our tutors had a gasmask available for us. However we forgot to purchase or acquire a small teddy bear and didn’t realise until we were back on location ready to film, so we decided to use the blade that Tom picks up before leaving. This would be a little teaser for the audience hinting that they didn’t make it or got into some trouble which they lost it.

Unfortunately it started to rain which slowed us down slightly but we realised it could add more to the scene, makes it more glum and miserable. For this I was on camera as I imagined on how it was meant to appear, Lewis was on sound and Jordan was in the hazmat suit. We did have some difficulties with keeping the mask on as it was old and the straps where broken but eventually sellotape it into place.

Once we did that we decided to keep Jordan in the suit and take a couple of pictures which would be used for out catalogue picture. Below are the images we took.

With a bit of editing, we decided to make this our catalogue photo for the exibition.

Rehearsal

With our shooting days around the corner, all of the crew thought it would be more beneficial to get the cast to practice their scenes so that we would have more time to shoot. However due to everyone’s schedule during the week we had to do it stages. I especially wanted Phil & George to get some rehearsal time as they have the most crucial scenes together and I just wanted them to have a bit of time to become comfortable with each other seeing as the majority of their scenes are intense. Lewis and I arranged for George and Phil to come to location to practice as it will help them know their positions and environment better. I was a bit nervous about George as he is a young kid and I thought would have been nervous however he was excellent. He was instantly comfortable with everything and very convincing, what I especially enjoyed about him was his input, he and Phil were doing the second basement scene and it felt like it needed something so I allowed them to improve and they both came up with an aggressive shove against the whole which seemed painful but he kept encouraging for more. Working with George was extremely enjoyable, he seemed to excite constantly and was a great laugh which I think is crucial on any project as they have an open personality with the rest of the cast and crew then everyone is more comfortable to engage with suggestions.

Whilst watching George working on the scenes, I started to rethink the character “Tom”. Tom in my mind is my personal own creation and is still in the development stages; originally I wanted to deliver the impression as “Tom” being a “Chav”. Stereotyping the character to certain qualities but whilst observing Phil acting, I realised it would be more realistic to the story if “Tom” wasn’t stereotyped to a chav but instead was appeared as a casual everyday teenager, it makes the audience more comfortable to engage with the story and character.

Here some images of them on set.

The next rehearsal we arranged was with Phil and Heather, their scenes together are also intense but this was mainly to make Heather more comfortable with everything. Previously when I discussed the script with Heather, she was fine with everything but once she started to learn her lines and rehearse she became terrified and underestimated herself, which I assume is natural.  It was difficult to rehearse with them considering Heather wasn’t able to come to location until the shoot day so we had to practice with her at her house, imagining us on location. Even though they were working imagining they’re on location we all know it would play out much differently on location.

After a couple of practices, they worked together very well. Below is the footage Jordan Gott recorded.
